WATER COOLERS IN HOSPITALS & NURSING HOMES
The British Water Cooler Association (BWCA) has worked to issue guidelines to improve installation and maintenance of water coolers in hospitals, hospices and nursing and elderly care homes.
The guide warns that use of water coolers by vulnerable people makes hygiene of paramount importance.
In addition the BWCA is a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Hydration which has been set up to review best practice in the important area of healthcare.
Why do hospital locations have water coolers?
The guide The Facts About……Healthy Hydration for Vulnerable and Elderly People offers information that emphasises how proper hydration is a top priority for health care professionals.
Dehydration is a danger for elderly people whose thirst mechanism is not acute. For some people in healthcare making water or other drinks available is not enough; staff must ensure that patients are able to access the drinks.
Initially hospital management can be sceptical at the suggestion of installing water coolers for hospital patients and staff. This can be resolved by installing a mains fed cooler in an institution for a trial period to give first hand experience of the benefits of unlimited, clean, safe drinking water.
